Hello Everyone:
Still some excellent events going on as we roll towards the long holidays (in your dreams start-ups operating globally!!).
WellyForge6 (The Christmas Edition) on Weds Dec 10th - last 5 tickets - the final snapshot speakers are KiwiNet Commercialization Icon Award Winner, Suse Reynolds and Young Enterprise Scheme Regional Award Winner, Lachlan Mead (good luck in the nationals on 4th Dec at Takina!).
Also note the Avatar premiere on Saturday Dec 13th at the Embassy, bound to be a big day on Courtenay Place.
And, watch for an interesting case study on scaling up to be posted onto What Founders Want on Thursday, imagine building a SaaS company from Wellington to take 40% of the US market and help millions of people in the process! And, since SaaS is so important for Wellington, WellyForge will be sponsoring SaaSmas on Dec 17th.
Welcome to Rintr to the ecosystem map (#91 in the start-up section), and notice the sneaky introduction of Urban Adventure spots - biking, wind, sailing, surfing. Rod Drury recently suggested Wellington is / could be the global Urban Adventure Capital, where Adventure is extreme weather, sports, games, music, films, arts, start-ups and so on all available out-the-door - resonates with me, what else would you add to the map?
Rule #1 - Celebrate the Wins
Massey’s Joint Centre for Disaster Research wins award for Excellence in Emergency Communication Research.
Mario Wynands, PikPok CEO wins BusinessDesk’s CEO Index Award for Startups, “The zombie apocalypse is where NZ games maker PikPok thrives” (BusinessDesk). PikPok is NZ’s largest game studio, with a team of 180 on Willis St, along with 55 or so in Colombia.
Richard Taylor, Weta Workshop CEO wins BusinesDesk’s overall CEO Index Award - “he turns up for NZ. He’s created a premium brand that is sustainable and long term”.
Measurements Standards Lab and Earth Science NZ celebrate funding for Quantum Seismic Detection, great to see this collaboration from Hutt based groups with the UK.
And it was the 2degrees Wellington Regional Business Excellence Awards last week, and the more start-up / innovation-based awards went to:
OpenStar Technologies for Excellence in Technology & Innovation, this our local nuclear fusion company (and WellyForge2 speakers).
Roady for Excellence in Hospitality, Tourism & Retail, well done Roscoe, thanks again for spooking your story up for WellyForge5.
Strictly Savvy for Excellence in Service & Support , I know several start-ups around town use them.
AROTEC Diagnostics for Excellence in Manufacturing, this is a biotec of 25+ years standing based at Gracefield in Lower Hutt, they provide precision autoimmune diagnostic solutions.
AROTEC Diagnostics is the Supreme Winner!
Local investor David Miller, points out that AROTEC and OpenStar both had origins from research undertaken at the Gracefield Innovation Quarter in Lower Hutt, and it is the Gracefield site where there is huge uncertainty as part of the fall-out of closing down Callaghan Innovation - not good for investment or the companies currently around that area.
And other recent media coverage of local interest:
Andrew Butel’s amazing story of founder fraud from Capital Capital can be found on Stuff
Massey gets more funding for Disaster Research, this time for how timber floors work with quakes and why we don’t all prepare for disasters
Startup Theatre Podcast with Dave Shoemack of Goodnature, he gave a great talk at WellyForge4, and this is a great podcast with Troy & Serge - “Bikes, Rates and Natural Perfume”
KiwiSaaS telling us about Matomo, the ethical analytics pioneers, make sure you meet founder Matthieu Aubry at a WellyForge event (or sauna)
The Massey Design School exhibition is over, but you can check out some of the work on-line, like this from Tia Betteridge to connect up solo travelers.
Rule #2 - Understand Your Environment
EarthScience NZ announces new CEO, James Palmer. EarthScience is the combined GNS and NIWA, followed by adding MetService and the Measurements Standards Lab. Revenue will be about $400m with 1500 staff, so it’s a big organization.
Rule #3 - Nothing Falls Thru The Gaps
The Fission Project - 8 weeks over summer to get your idea moving by working collaboratively with the team that’s made the Atom such a pumping community - last few spots available!! Make sure you check out the video.
TedX Studio Ideas Wanted! Contact Alex Matthews, this is where they film you professionally giving a TedX style talk for distribution. If LinkedIn doesn’t work for contact, then email me.
Rule #4 - Get Inspired, Meet the Locals
